Notey’s World is a music learning application designed for iOS (Link to app store) that features Notey, a musical note who goes on various adventures to explore the joy and wonders of music. Along with his fellow musical notes and instruments, Notey hopes to spread the understanding of music to everyone, no matter who they are! Players are instructed to use a guitar to play notes that will help Notey navigate the different levels and worlds that each minigame has to offer. Notey’s World makes use of musical note-reading technology, giving players the ability to control Notey’s actions with their instruments. Whether it be leading Notey to victory in a battle against Yeton’s goons or navigating halls. The game incorporates a story mode and several smaller mini-games, I primarily worked with the minigames Melody Madness and Record Runner.
In this video, Notey takes on a Boss Battle against 'Reiner the Wrecker'. Notey battles the goon by playing the melodies provided. Each time Notey deflects a note by playing on beat, that note flys back at Reiner and hurts him. At the end of each Melody, we calculate what % of Notes were hit and if that number exceeds our threshold the boss is hit and moves back a space on the platform. This demo was performed using the spacebar for testing purposes rather than the guitar that would be producing the music normally.
In this video, I am demonstrating the Record Runner mini-game using my voice as the input. Record Runner is a platformer concept mini-game designed for Notey's world as a way to teach players the skill of "Volume Dynamics". In this game, players control Notey with a guitar and Notey moves platforms based on the volume of each strum. The low platform laving the lowest volume threshold, the middle platform (arguably the hardest to stay on) has a medium volume threshold and the top platform has the loudest volume threshold. To play this game, the player must collect records and avoid boxes using volume as their control to switch between platforms. If the player collides with too many boxes too close together the player is caught by Reiner (The Enemy chasing him) and loses, bringing up the star rating. If the player makes it to the end of the level without being caught, they are also granted with a star rating.
Primarily working on the mini-games "Melody Madness" and "Record Runner", I ideated and helped implement new ideas for scoring and battle mechanics. I created slide decks to present my ideas to the CEO, Design lead,Team Lead and programmers to allow them to provide feedback and implement the ideas more seamlessly. Below, you can see how I demonstrated my ideas through the use of slides.
This is a paper prototype design using slides for new boss fight mechanics. I originally proposed 5 different boss battle mechanic ideas. As a team we decided on the fifth option and I fully fleshed out that option to be used for development. Included in the slides is a flowchart for how the battle will perform, along with a demo of the battle. The slide deck was passed along to the main programmers to further implement the idea.
This is a paper prototype design using slides for the new scoring mechanics. After further researching scoring mechanics and seeing what the other mini-games in development were using for scoring I came up with this scoring mechanic. This slide deck demonstrates how scoring is calculated in a typical play session of the Melody Madness mini-game.
